Green Day
By Abi Roe
Green Day -- you know you’ve heard the name. Of course you have! For one thing, they are the biggest alternative punk band to ever make a hit [or really, multiple hits]. From their albums “Dookie” to “21st Century Breakdown,” they’ve been referred to as the poster children of pop-core, the kings of punk-pop, and the voice of a generation.
But to the members of Green Day, collecting labels never really mattered. They just wrote their songs about girls, surviving in the slums of 2nd class, alienating girls, growing up, and oh yeah, girls, all as a means to escape the “boredom of the burbs.”
So why do we love these three rebels? We can relate to the music. You can’t tell me with a straight face that you’ve never been mad at rules or never thought to “dream and differ from the hollow lies.” The trio is just a few friends that just so happened to figure out they ruled.
Love them, hate them, whatever you think of Billy Joe, Mike, and Tre’, you cannot deny that you’ve heard of them.
Otep “Hush little baby . . . don’t make a sound . . . Hush little baby . . . don’t make a move.” That is the beginning of one of Otep’s – ahem -- somewhat disturbing songs. And just for a little trivia, the name of it is Eat the Children. It calms me down considerably.
Okay, all strangeness aside, Otep really is amazing. First of all, every screamer song you’ve heard is most likely sung by a guy. That’s your first mistake. Otep Shamaya, the lead singer, is like Alice in Wonderland combined with The Shining. She’s a cute little five-foot-six blonde who just so happens to be able to scream her lungs out. Being a former soldier, Shamaya has taken the ugliness and brutality of war and turned it into vocal style.
Joining her is crew of musicians known only as Rob, Moke, and eViL j.
Some call them horrible, talentless pieces of old bubble gum stuck to the bottom of a musical talent’s $400 Italian boots.
But me? I’m fascinated with them! Marilyn Manson, the king of creeps himself, complimented Otep’s deranged thoughts. Decide for yourself. Look up “Confrontation” and then judge. “Stand up. Speak out. Strike back.”

Sean Kingston
By Braxton Rhea
I love listening to Sean Kingston’s music. He is such a great artist! While listening to his songs, I’m usually in the chillin’ mood.
I especially enjoy these “I’m at War” lyrics:
“Salute all the veterans, and girl your love’s like a nuclear weapon. I’m a five-star purple hearter, purple sparkler camouflager. Follow my every command and order. You can just call me Captain Carter. So let the missiles rain on your parade ‘cause my love is a soldier, and my heart is a grenade. (kaboom) I’ll bomb any platoon. Just call me world war tune.” |

Pink & Shakira
By Kim Riddle
Pink’s “Funhouse” is a bit addictive. The lyrics are amazing, especially “This used to be our funhouse, but now it’s full of evil clowns.”
I think of love when I hear those words. It can be a nightmare. Whatever Pink’s intention, it is an awesome song, and I can’t help but sing along.
As for Shakira, I LOVE her song “She Wolf”! The lyrics are awesome, and I can’t really decide which ones I like the most. Like Pink’s “Funhouse,” this song is addictive, too. |
